You want to listen to music for a few more minutes, but you'd prefer the sound to stop automatically afterwards. Spotify's timer, also called Sleep Timer, allows you to set this playback limit.

It can be useful at the end of the day or during a short break. Choose a duration that makes sense for the session and check the activation confirmation before putting the device aside.

Where to find the timer on my cell phone

  1. Start playing a song or a podcast.
  2. Tap the playback bar to open the screen. Playing now.
  3. For music, open the three-dot menu and search. Sleep Timer or the timer option in the app's language.

The position of the control may vary depending on the interface. Redesigned queue for Premium users, Spotify also includes access to the Sleep Timer among the playback controls.

Choose between duration and end of track.

A 15-minute time limit is suitable for a pause with a set end time, even if a song is still playing. Ending at the end of the track makes more sense when your priority is to finish that audio without a cut in the middle.

Before confirming, check which option appears for the current content. A short track and a long episode represent very different lengths; choosing by option name without looking at what's playing can result in a longer session than you intended.

Timer and AutoPlay solve different situations.

The timer limits listening time. AutoPlay, on the other hand, makes Spotify continue playing similar music when an album, playlist, or selection comes to an end.

If the problem is getting these suggestions to work, on your phone open your profile picture, go to Settings and privacy → Playback and disable AutoPlay. This is the way of Spotify help center. Disabling AutoPlay does not set a time limit in minutes for the current session.

For a long playlist, therefore, use the timer when you want to stop before the end. Adjust AutoPlay when you want to control what happens after the selection finishes.

Check the session before putting the device aside.

Check the chosen time frame and which device the sound is playing on. If you're using a speaker or other device for the first time, try a short interval while you're still nearby. To prepare episodes before losing connection, also see How to listen to podcasts offline.
